Thanks to the suckers who send in magazine money for helping fund the blog! Its not cheap to blog and its great for you guys to voluntarially support it!
Looks like a typical bit of Journalism missing the point everywhere!! the guy who was prosecuted for the tape incidence lamed it with some screws! Let them have there day in court, 15 grand wont get them through the door even with a free advocate. Thanks to George for posting it. Is the aplication of tape a shoe? does it have the same horse harming qualities as nailed steel? No comment just wondering out loud.
George, I humbly accept your thanks, if you notice, YOU promoted Fran and the hoocare and lameness blog , and George S ,commented, within the realm of the thread! course there is no constant vigilance on my part but YOU forward some cash to purchase someones time , we could look into providing police to help keep you who may need the help staying in bounds. still counting geese? ray
The original prosecution found the man guilty as it was an appliance to the hoof that couldn't be removed without specialist tools. Hoof boots are fine as they slip on and off, same with a poulitce etc. but if you start allowing equicasts then whats next? Imprint shoes? Sigafoos? The barefoot folk think they can take a team on made up of Vets, Registered Farriers, Parliament Law, BHS and WHW without them having any formal training system in place!!?? Seems like a complete non starter to me.
He had both hands removed and was pegged out in front of Sefton House, to let the crows peck out his eyes.
This is my favorite site for the barefoot brigade, they speak with such authority about sh*t, how do you beaf up lateral cartilages? but it sounds great. http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=570138
Marc, is it your understanding that if no "specialty"tool was required, the use of casting tape as an appliance would be ? ok? for lack of a better term. further if scissors could be used ,would they be considered"specialty " tool? tin snips, electrician snips? I m just trying to get my head around the explanation as you stated dealing with "specialist" tools and what defines that term, and I'm presuming "specialty" tool in this case is a tool usually used by a farrier in applying or removing fe,al, metal or composite horseshoes, but not used commonly by others. Thanks Ray
In a way it seems like the Brits missed the boat. We (farriers) all know that the most important part of applying a shoe is the trim. In a way we are all barefoot trimmers ( I can't trim a hoof with the shoe on). The difference between a barefoot trim and a good trimmed hoof done by a farrier - nothing.
That is exactly what i meant, farriery tools used to remove a permanent item attached to the hoof wall.
You're singing to the choir here. Lameness prevention by untrained and incompetant trimmers is what the guys at the top are trying to achieve.
YES!!!!!! and when they think pulling shoes off of a now sound horse---[ that at one time a very lame horse--] that the Vet and I have worked on for over a Year!!! and have it Sound!!..............they come along and tell the owner that shoes are not needed. BTW-never found out if the horse ever went lame or not?? Remember some of us are women farriers....Marc Jerram
When I meant at the top I mean various councils that govern the uk system I don't think there are any women on that at present. Of course there are plenty of top girl farriers
the principal is good George , unfortunately the practice is bloody awful , it wont be too long before the act is binned unless the WCF and FRC get their act into gear
I agree George we did our best for years to try and get a similar act made in Ireland to no avail and then the European farriers association tried it on a European level, again to no avail. Chris I really hope you guys hold strong against the pressure, I doubt the barefoot enthusiasts will lie down to easily, most of their customers seem completely brainwashed
