I did trim # 56 with the rasp today. It seemed to be working me pretty hard, but maybe the feet were just hard 'cause it was about 20 degrees. I'll try a couple more before I attempt to resharpen it. I'm keeping it in the car and tomorrow and Thursday are "truck days", so I'll probably use it again Friday. Regards
Rick, please keep us posted on how it works on Friday and thereafter, and overall what you think of them. thanks Michael I've never been into resharpening rasps or mill tooths. that said, ,because the tooth configuration is the same or very close to the hoof plane ,it should sharpen in the same way, I think Tom Bloomer (in Deleware)uses a scotch brite wheel and if I remember John Muldoon(in Oklahoma) a cotton wheel with one of the rouges, i think black, on the hoof planes. They are both members of the farriersforum.com community, you could contact them direct if they don t chime in on their own, let me know how it works out , Thanks ray
I sharpen mine with a cotton wheel and black/gray on the rasp side, cotton wheel with green on the file side. When I first notice me having to push my rasp I touch them up. Few swipes against the direction of wheel turning. Sharpen this black master I had last seven times and did 83 horses with it before making it a finish rasp. Having ridden hundreds of miles with John Muldoon I can tell you that he uses a cotton wheel with gray/black rouge. Holding the rasp by the handle hold the rasp against the wheel and pull slowly backwards towards you keeping the rasp in contact with the wheel. I can also tell you that "red" rouge does not work as well as the black. IMO
This Just in, a farrier called this evening to order another 6/6 mill tooth , saying that he was to a point of resharpening his original after every horse. I asked what he was using for the process, he said cotton wheel and green rouge........... passing on the info. Ray
I use green rouge and a cotton wheel also. But I'm not sure I understand why you would need to do it after every horse, unless he is overheating it. Regards
Can someone take a photo of the angle they hold the rasp at? Oh and could they post the photo as well.
Michael, I'm hoping to set foot in the shop this weekend. I've never sharpened the 6/6 plane before, but plan on doing it the same as a regular rasp, holding it square to the wheel and running it down the rasp. If I get to it, I'll post a picture and let you know how it worked. Also hoping to get at least a couple of bar shoes done. Regards
Rick, if i understood him i think he felt that it was used enough to only held an edge long enough for one horse, that s what prompted him to order another. ray
I sharpened the plane this weekend. Got 8 more trims out of it today. I'm up to 64. It's not working like new, or as good as any new rasp, but is still working better than most I resharpen. I'm guessing I'll get about 70-75 trims out of it before I decide I'm working too hard. The ones I get back from "the file sharpening company" are way sharper then new, even. I might send the plane in the next time I send a batch. Regards
new mill tooth/hoof plane copies arrived today.3 pcs from another manufacturer, i ll let you know what i think next week. Ray
I have been using the 6/6 file for the last two weeks. I am still on my first. I just resharpen before I feel like it is getting too dull. We have had some snow here and feet are softer then they have been in months and it just peels the hoof off. Cleans out easy as well. At this rate I think I might be able to make one last a month. I was using a new save edge every 3 to 4 days. So I am more then happy with it.
Michael so are you going to tell your sharpening process or it part of the one & only secret sauce recipe book? Regards Ray
