But we own him that............. We must get him started and give him a portion of our clients so he may start out doing as well as we are. You know socialism and all.

Ok guys and gals. I have a contest coming up in July and another in August. As you know making shoes in the middle of the summer rush and the heat can be tough. So if everyone here can just make a pair of shoes for the contest every week and mail them to me I can put them in my pile of practice shoe. That way when anyone stops buy I can show them how much I have accomplished getting ready. I think you guys owe me, and think of how much better I'll be when I have that pile of shoes.

I had a young fella come apprentice. his rich parents had paid for him to attend 32 weeks at mitch taylors school. he was unable to hack it. he has lately been rotating thru a variety of trade schools doing a different profession each year.

You need a lot of desire to succeed in this or any business. Its not doing you any favors to knock down an obstacle we all managed to overcome. If you cant you wouldnt make it anyway.

This is the worst financial advise I think I have ever heard. Let's charge up a credit card to go to school and have to make payments with a high interest rate every month, when there is no income to pay the payments and then start up a business when we get out of school still with no money and now your in collections and being taken to court because you haven't made the payments.

This is exactly why this country is in a mess, borrow money to do something that we can't pay for rather than work your but off to pay for things.

Why not work a couple jobs for a year and save the money to go to school, then when you get done you have no debt.

I was making a funny....and ray deleted my post on credit cards with the new business.
    on a serious note:
but most have to take out a student loan to go to farrier school and most run $7,500 to up to $20K now. there are cheaper; but only for a few weeks. then you have your tools before starting. tools cost the barest mininum of $1,500 to get started, not including a few cases of shoes to shoe with.
so taking out a student loan is what most have to do now.

This is one of the lowest cost businesses to enter. You don't have to go to school. You prove you can work for a good Farrier and learn as you go and start a business of your own on the side, like the fellow Travis works with.
You only need a modest truck with a cheap cap, a couple thousand in tools (a lot of good used tools on ebay) and supplies. Work graveyards at the mill, get part time jobs like I and many of us have to start.
Both of the credit card post were wrong. The deleted one was way out of context, the second one (the funny one with no punch line) was a recipe for failure for a young kid starting a business.

    Shorty,
It ain't easy. most of the best Farriers I know never went to school. I kind of comprised, I went to a lousy school. You have a great opportunity with your Uncle Barry to teach you.
With his condition (we'll be praying for you all) you may be able to take on more work for him.
Most guys don't want to waist time on young wannabes. If you can get a foot in the door though, you'll have them not wanting to let you go. My son went to LA Ca. when he was 19, and got on with a top jumper Farrier. He had plenty of other guys asking him to work for them too, which he would do on his days off.
Welcome to starting out. In a few years you'll be complaining about these worthless kids coming into the trade who ain't worth spit.
    Call me sometime.
