Here's what a few days next week look like for me: Monday- 2 full sets, 4 front only, at one stop. Wednesday- 5 full sets, at one stop. Thursday- 2 front only, 6 trims, at two stops. This is about the quantity of horses I like to do in a day, I know it's not nearly as much as a lot of people but it's enough for me.
John 40 trims in Ireland would be the same effort as 25 here in the desert not cause of the heat just the hooves feel like their made of concrete! Ive worn out a pair of ge cutters and a pair of ge half round cutters in 7 months trimming and Im not doing large numbers, I had a set at home from '08 t0 '12 and they are almost perfect.
I ran the question to Ken the otherday known he does alot of trims he said he done 42 trims mares/foals in a half day
So I have a similar question: What's the most you WILL do in a day? Let's say someone new calls and says I have X amount of horses that need shod/trimmed/whatever. At what point would you say, well that's too many for one day so I'll have to break it up into two separate days.
Is there a time limit on this phantom client and do they have cash and are they paying good money...do we have to fight the horses...do they want a discount seeing how they have so many at this one stop... The price is 150 a head but I ain't gonna step over a 100 dollar bill if they said 20 for 100 a head at one stop...
The time limit is however long you're willing to work that day. They have decently behaved horses, although one or two may be a tad flightly and you'll have to baby them a bit while working on them. The horses are all caught and ready for you and their feet are in acceptable condition. Although, they are just a bit overdue as the owner has had a difficult time finding a new farrier since their previous one moved out of the area about 10 weeks ago. They are very nice people who do not ask for a discount and pay you with a check that never bounces. I can provide more details on the phantom client if you would like Travis.
How do you work a stop like that Smitty?. . .how's the Weitl split up and how many hours at it? Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
pull out three Josh and just alternate making sure we are not holding each other up start about 9am home by 6
What would you beer having a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th year app doing? I can see how having one more horse than number of guys working would help. A buddy comes up to a barn by me. We have 2 out. I'm pulling everything, knifing fronts, trimming hinds snag finishing. He trims all the fronts, fits, and nails. 12-13 a day is typical start about 9 done about 730 with a lunch Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
That seems reasonable. Averages out at 8 sets each and even I can just about manage 8 sets in a day in one place. 42 trims in half a day... If you take a working day as 8 hours, that's 42 trims in 4 hours so over ten trims an hour ie. better than 6 mins a trim for four hours solid. I can't do that...
10 sets a day at my rates (and I'm cheap) would be 2750 a week or 137,500 a year. That's a nice living (if you like shoeing horses...)
well josh a 1st year at six months on should be able to strip and dress for hot fitting (WELL) should be to strip and dress for cold fitting (WELL) should be able for me to hammer clench (GOOD) if he hasent reached this he is not with me
Neither can I. And, since I didn't just get off the turnip boat, that number seems rather dubious to me. However, it would depend on what one considers as actually trimming the hoof. And, it would have to include neveer having to fetch or return a horse/horses to/from their abode.
