    Hello all (again)

Since I had the chance to recently pick your brains on your chosen preferances when clenching. And I today bought a new pair of nippers it got me wondering what length of nippers others use and why? After talking with the employee at the store he says he orefers 12" racetrack nippers says everything more than that is a waste and too much to handle. I like 14" nippers as it makes cutting a lot less tiring on your hands and its not too big.. fits nicely in the shoeing box as well :)

Always wise to listen to a sales guy and not a actual Farrier that works and uses them daily...just sayin..

I think 12 inch nippers might be a little better than 10 inch nippers. Or should I say 10 inch nippers would be a little bit more useless than 12 inch nippers, but not much.:D

18 Ray? I'd need to stand outside the stable with the horse still in there to use them... I use 12 inch because they were cheaper..

    David,

I do stand outside the stable with the horse inside! it s alot safer! doesn t everyone?

I ve found that the xtra reins are great on thick/ hard hooves, and i often shinnie/choke up when i don t need the leverage. I started with 12 s years ago, went to 15s ,now when i use 12 s they feel like nail nippers, but it s all what one get s use to and is comfortable with.

I ve had several farriers buy brand new ,top quality nippers , hand them back to me without using them and ask me to send them out to be rebuilt. cause it s what they re use to!

    Regards

    Ray

I'm left handed but come from an era where we didn't have left handed scissors when I was a kid. Out of necessity I had to learn to do some things right handed.

That said, some of my tools are lefties and some righties. But all my righties are broke in by a lefty and can't be used by my right handed friends.

As for nippers, I carry 12" in my shoeing box. Probably cause of a plaiting background. I keep 14" on my hoof jack for trimming. I keep all my horses on a good schedule and sometimes only need a rasp.

If I was working on horses in a dry/arid environment then my nippers would get longer.

Back to the salesman and his comments. Don't know what brand he's selling but he sounds like a dumbass. Where I buy mine there's only about $6 difference between 12" and 15". 14" are more than both 12" and 15".

Take into account how many horses you get out of a set of nippers and $6 isn't shit. Send them off for rebuild and they'll last a year and a half or so depending on the numbers you do. Maintain them yourself and they can last much longer.

I think a large portion of the tea I was swallowing just came out my nose with that comment.

The shop I go to they always try to talk you into buying a new knife sharpener from this little cup they have on the desk. Have half the mind to just buy the whole cup so they never ask again

Ray, can you post some pics of your nipper extensions? I thinned down the reins on my daughter's 15" GEs to make them more female friendly but 3 more inches might helped on hard feet & half drafts.
