Looks like someone put a gusset in the toe then riveted a thin piece of metal across it so it could be reset another time. Or, the shoe cracked/broke at the toe and a metal strip was added to hold it together for one more reset.

There is one rivet only, Rick, and no other piece of metal added. Whoever made it cut an expensive shoe in half, forged a step on each half and fitted it back together with a rivet to work like a hinge. Can't wait for an explanation if somebody has one.

Yeah i made a hinge shoe at a competition last year in an open forging class. The idea was for cowboys to carry it with them and if they lost a shoe in the middle of the desert they can tack one on straight away and prevent the horse going sore until they can get home and call the farrier for a replacement.

Wow. Those four tungsten pins in the toe certainly preserved the shoe for a long time.

I wouldn't put that shoe on any horse regardless of the theory behind it.

I'm nervous about reading the theory behind it later because I might get dumber.

this would be a good thread to set up pics of odd shoes that have been pulled off of horses you are shoeing on. Just a thought

Platerforge I think that's a great idea...I got a set of Jim crew healthy stride junk in the truck I will put up as well...I will say say the shoes above I heard and read where great results where had ..just not on this guy.. but I have had many Shoeing jobs that work great on one horse and turn out a hot mess on another..
