stamps

    just been talking to an engineer and he asked why dont you make stamps out of old drill bits . i have never thought why not , we make ours of either S1 or S7 . anybody know why we dont use HSS drill bits ?

    my own but will buy some on my trip , Mark wants flatland forge i fancy some Bloom tools , see what price things are

    been looking at a few makes , Jim Poor seems to make a lot for others and puts their name on them , all are made with S7 , i reckon they must all be the same its a matter of preference , i will see when i get there , im looking more at fullers

    they have the stripes down the side ? saw them last week , several were using them , they looked good ,

    Chris, the reason for not using HSS is that it work hardens and shatters with impact. The business end, the one going into hot steel, is not the problem; it's the struck end that will throw sharpnel. If you took the time to conrinnually anneal and grind the mushroom off the end you could get away with it. Just not worth it with the current price of new S7 or H13.

    Chris I use a Jim Keith, Its very good, holds its edge well and crucially doesnt mark the hammer.

    I tried all of the above as stamps. Two problems
    1.) they seem to tear the envelopes
    2.) the postal service sent them all back as postage due.

    Do they seem not to work at all as stamps.
