one is a plain Navicular shoe.
the other is the eggbar navicular shoe.
It is used when the navicular bone is is broken; which was put on after surgery...[eggbar navic]
for this racehorse as rx by the vet.
the plain navicular shoe is used when there is pain in the region due to strain on the navicular bursa or as the vet was explaining to me; when there is inflamation and then the bone starts to ossifies in that region.
I have one on now that only lasts about 4 weeks and then pain starts all over again.
Note: I can not find steel navicular shoes anymore, maybe Ray would know.

Chris if you blunt the toes and set them back, I get great results that way..

the vet wanted more even weight distributed around the whole hoof and to prevent the foot from sinking down further in the soft ground and the deep sawdust being used in his stall.

quicker breakover and your right on the shoe is not graduated; which I find to be a oxymoron? myself.

it does seem to help in limited shoeing circumstances

heels that high can raise the angle of the hoof to almost an unnatural stance.
